The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Advanced Drainage Systems is favored because its leadership in stormwater solutions, vertically integrated recycled-plastic network, and broad exposure to non-residential, residential, infrastructure, and agriculture markets support durable above-market growth. The company’s mix shift toward higher-margin Allied Products and Infiltrator, plus pricing power and operating leverage, helped produce F1Q27 EPS of $2.49 and 9.0% organic sales growth, while the price/cost/mix bucket added $34 million to adjusted EBITDA. Even with near-term margin compression expected as pre-buying normalizes and resin costs flow through, management’s strong capital allocation, including 1.6 million shares repurchased for $228.5 million, supports an attractive fundamental outlook.

Bear case

Advanced Drainage Systems is exposed to highly cyclical construction end markets, and a delayed residential recovery or weaker nonresidential demand could keep volumes and mix under pressure, especially since nonresidential accounts for nearly 50% of the demand profile. Its profitability is also vulnerable to volatile resin, diesel, and transportation costs; even with dollar-for-dollar pricing pass-through, management expects an uneven quarterly margin cadence, with F2Q27 margin decline worse than the typical 300 bps as peak resin costs hit cost of sales and transportation costs stay significantly elevated. Competitive pressure and commoditized pipe products add further downside, while margin expansion may already be near peak levels if acquisition integration risk, slower cross-selling, or a material giveback on price erodes pricing power.
