The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Emerson Electric is positioned favorably because its post-divestiture portfolio is increasingly concentrated in industrial automation, where secular demand from data centers, electrification, LNG, reshoring, and nuclear can sustain growth near the top end of its 4-7% target range. Management and analysts see FY27 adj. EPS of $7.35 and FY28 of $8.20, supported by strong orders in software and systems, about $14B of cash from operations and $12B of free cash flow in FY26-28, and roughly $1B of optional bolt-on M&A capacity. Its large installed content in mission-critical systems, including Ovation and valves, plus ongoing share repurchases and margin tailwinds from contract timing, should help convert backlog into durable earnings expansion.

Bear case

Emerson Electric is exposed to weak industrial production, lower automation spending, and project delays that can slow demand across general industrial, automotive, logistics, medical, and aerospace end markets. Elevated interest rates, trade conflicts, and geopolitical tensions such as the Iran conflict can further defer large projects and trim near-term sales, while commodity swings in oil and natural gas can disrupt upstream, midstream, and downstream activity. Despite a sharper focus after divesting roughly one-third of sales from commercial/climate solutions as recently as FY21, the stock has struggled to escape a 14x-23x trading range, and its 22.0x FY26 and 19.7x FY27 multiples already look rich against modest FY27 organic growth of 4.7%.
