The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Corning is favored because its Optical segment is benefiting from AI data-center infrastructure spending, with management saying it can reach a $20 billion annualized sales rate in 3Q and sustain high-teens growth, while recent Verizon, Lumen, Zayo, and AT&T agreements reinforce a long runway for data-center interconnect demand. Its profitability outlook is also improving, as margins have already exceeded the prior 20% target and ROIC is expected to approach the ~20% range as sales scale, supporting roughly 30% EPS CAGR and FCF growth in upcoming years. Additional upside comes from being the lone US-based polysilicon and wafer manufacturer, which should benefit from the Section 232 ruling, while its glass-core substrate and photonics optionality add incremental revenue and strategic positioning in US onshoring.

Bear case

Corning is viewed negatively because its earnings outlook depends heavily on cyclical and fragile end markets, including display glass, smartphones, tablets, PCs, and automotive, while more than 55% of sales are international and about 30% are tied to China. The company also faces risk from weaker-than-expected fiber optics demand and potential slowdown in AI data center investment, even as its Optical business benefits from hyperscaler spending; those positives may not offset uncertainty around consumer demand, reduced AI-related capex from top customers, and the highly uncertain adoption timeline for microLED. Inflationary COGS pressure, possible macro downturn, geopolitical tension, and limited valuation upside further weaken the fundamental case, especially if demand or pricing fails to support margins and free cash flow.
