The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Vera Therapeutics is favored because Trutakna achieved FDA accelerated approval on July 7, becoming the first approved agent targeting both BAFF and APRIL in IgAN, which materially de-risks the platform and gives the company a commercial entry point. The outlook is further strengthened by management’s expectation for the ORIGIN 3 eGFR readout in 3Q26 and an sBLA filing in 4Q26, a timeline that could support potential full approval in 2027 and improve formulary access and adoption. Commercial comparables also look encouraging, as Otsuka’s Voyxact has shown meaningful eGFR gains and early launch traction, while Vera’s 2Q26 update suggests participation in a growing IgAN market with additional upside from Filspari’s 2,012 PSFs in 2Q26.

Bear case

Vera Therapeutics is viewed negatively because its lead asset, atacicept, faces a difficult commercialization path despite encouraging proteinuria and eGFR signals, since FDA materials stress that the interim ORIGIN3 kidney-function data are based on a small sample and carry “considerable uncertainty” about effect size. Competitive pressure is also intensifying after Voyxact’s strong VISIONARY results on August 3, including a +4.5 mL/min/1.73m² annualized eGFR slope advantage at 24 months and monthly dosing that may be more attractive than atacicept’s weekly administration, forcing a lower assumed peak penetration rate to 15% from 20%. Financially, Vera reported no revenue in 2Q26, a $1.52 per-share net loss, and about $499M of cash and investments, but it is still likely to need additional funding while regulatory risk and commercial execution remain unresolved.
