The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

GLOBALFOUNDRIES is supported by improving fundamentals as 1Q26 revenue of $1.63B came in slightly ahead of guidance and non-IFRS gross margin reached 29.0%, 200bps above the guide midpoint, showing better mix and improving utilization. Its outlook is further strengthened by CY26 growth led by Communication Infrastructure & Data Center, expected up high-30% YoY, alongside Automotive up low double-digits and IoT up mid-single digits, while higher-margin SiPho, SatCom, and IP/licensing should expand earnings quality. With capacity in SiGe booked through CY27, SiPho and AMF adding revenue contribution, and operating expenses guided around $225MM through CY26, the company appears positioned for margin expansion and a more durable growth mix.

Bear case

GLOBALFOUNDRIES is facing a weak fundamental setup because supply shortages in basic materials and semiconductor substrates are pressuring top-line growth while limited demand for differentiated technologies like SiGe and SiPho constrains gross margin expansion. Its execution has also lagged targets, with CY25 operating margins at 15.7% versus a ~25% guide and revenues posting a -6% CAGR in the CY22-25 window, reflecting weaker comparables and lost data-center sockets. In addition, capacity additions at similar process nodes, cyclical end-market demand, and long-term supply contract obligations could intensify pricing pressure, reduce flexibility, and keep profitability below potential.
